KEVIN JULIEN
Kevin Julien ft David & Tiffany Spencer
Love ONlY KNOWS HOW TO LOVE
An argument could be made that this is Julien's most profound work to date.
The words on their own might by some be considered poetry.
The marriage of the words and the music is the realization of a unique work; "poetry in motion".
The lyrics explore love as a being.
Something that only knows to be itself with unlimited power and agency.
The song has a structure that is difficult to define.
Is the line "Love Only Knows How To Love" the verse? Or is it the Chorus? Is there a Chorus?
The song travels through several keys signatures; never repeating chord changes but concludes with its arrival back at the home key.
It is as if the harmonic framework serves as a metaphor for love's journey impacting the world and at its end finding it can only return to what it is.
Is "Love Only Knows How To Love" a Gospel Song? Is it Soul Music?
Like much of Julien's work is is difficult to identify a specific genre but it appears to have echos of different musical styles.
But most of all it has his own musical style . This is an artist that has found his own voice.
The song is blessed with the glorious vocals of David and Tiffany Spencer who say:
"Julien wrote a beautiful song that the world needs to here now."
Kevin Julien & The Sureshot Immaculate
THE IMPOSSIBLE
Kevin Julien launches "The Sureshot Immaculate" (an alter ego for his jazz and improvisational excursions) with the release an extended play of original compositions.
The pulsating opening track "Mellifluous" is a driven by the amazing breakbeat drumming of Kenny Phelps. With elements of latin music it brought out compelling musical statements from all of the soloists.
"Bravado" is a blues and continues the uptempo theme with changes in feel and time signatures along the way.
The Latin flavor continues with "Just When I Thought It Was Over". A mid tempo romper it perfectly sets the stage for the final piece.
The record closes with "Blood and Treasure". The haunting piece has proven popular among Jazz connoisseurs as it regularly features on radio shows and popular Jazz playlists.
It is a composition with many layers of musical ambiguity. Sometimes it is modal, at others chordal. It is in waltz time and could be classed as a blues but it does not sound like what we usually recognize as the blues.
I have given my life (blood) and honed my craft (treasure) to do this.
Everything it took to get to the release of this recording could be considered "The Impossible".
